Mod introduces a map configuration page when starting a new campaign.

Options are:
Map Height
Map Width
Land Mass Ratio
Water Connectivity

Option to start with all settlements Hidden
Debug option (allows you to see the entire map)

My goal was to be able to have more control over the map generation when I started this mod. I quickly realized that the current map generation algorithm very much wants to create the default kind of map we see in Battle Brothers. The constraints are very tight and don’t lend well to values outside of defaults. In order to get the kind of control I’m looking for, I am going to need to rewrite the map generation algorithms to be more flexible with variance.

But, I’ve been told that what is here may still be useful for others, so I’m putting it up for other to do with as they please.

I have plans for this mod, but other bigger mod plans keep pushing this priority lower.

Bad news on the map size. Devs have told us that the map size can not solely be changed from with the scripts — which means it also needs to be changed in the .exe. What that means is maps bigger than 140×140 will have rendering issues when zoomed in. You can see the map zoomed out, but on the edges, if you zoom in you loose all the textures.

Anyone got some good map seeds?

My current game is fun and I’m loving the DLC honestly, but I wish I got more seeds with a city/town or two in or near the far north (instead of barely entering the tundra) and more maps with the southern cities on the water.

found the seed looking at poachers seeds, all 3 poacher bros have decent stats where they matter most (hunter 59range skill), and the traits are all positive. seed looks similarly positive for southern mercenaries. have not checked it for every start.

ok, I don’t know if I’m the best at judging seeds based on looking at the map, but I reccomend this seed because of the map. the main advantage of this map is the clusters of settlements with good road systems. especially the fact that there is a loop in the south with two harbors, all 3 city states, a small town with dye, and a citadel. there is also a loop with decent roads in the north but there is some slowing terrain along the north. biggest fault of this map is that the only two harbors are close to each other, but at least they are both within the best loop of roads. it seems like there is a good mix of settlements on different terrains on this map.

edit2 — I’m not as happy with the above seed as I was 1 day after the release of blazing deserts. I’ve done a lot of seed hunting since then and wanted to add my best find to page 1 of this thread. I’ve shared alot of seeds I think are good in this thread, below is the most popular one so far —

peasant militia seed: TNZNYTDWNY

harbors: 2northwest, 2southwest, 1 citystate south

nice concentration of settlements for the northern house, south more spread out.

best set of brothers I’ve ever found on a peasant militia seed I think (including on old versions of the game). my standard I shoot for is to find a good bannerman, 2 good ranged attackers, and as much good melee as possible, here are the brothers —
siegfried — good bannerman
Hjalmar, ralf — solid ranged by peasant militia standards
hartwig, dietrich — good in both melee attack and defense
anselm — don’t worry about having to use him as fodder but may develop into a decent tank with some levels
reiner — good melee attack, poor melee defense, may have to put him on the front line early but if he survives he is a great 2 tile melee user
bernfried, geralt — could be useful fodder early on, consider firing one of them maybe immediately.
guntram, olaf, raimund — should be immediately fired for sure.

Best one I’ve found so far.

Archer: Average, no traits
Axe: Iron Lungs + Bloodthirsty
Spear: Dexterous + Fearless (whopping 66 melee to start)

Map has terrible port travel, but a long line of citadels and trading cities along the edge of the wilderness — making for great loot runs back and forth.
No gems, but 3 dye makers, and a few salts and ambers.
Fair few hunter cabins for archer needs to replace your ♥♥♥♥♥♥ starter bro.
1 Herbalist grove.

Factions 8/7/4 split — 8 belonging to the justice/honour house.

Archer: Brute
Axe: Loyal + Huge
Spear: Athletic + Swift

Gems, dyes, many salts and ambers, within walking distance of hubs.
Hunters, Herbalists, etc

Only 3 Ports but they connect NW Corner to S and SE

Donation Points system

This mod is not opted-in to receive Donation Points

I created this mod so that I could collect data about map seeds. The aim was to collect enough data to make an informed choice of search parameters for a second mod designed to search for potentially good seeds, but I realised that the data produced by this mod already provided a rich source of seeds, and that the second mod probably wasn’t necessary.

Currently this mod records the following 63 data in the Battle Brothers log:

  • Seed: the map seed.
  • Diameter, Radius and Size: three measures of how spread out the settlements on a map are (smaller numbers indicate a lower spread).
  • Sea Diamater, Sea Radius and Sea Size: same as the above, but only looking at settlements containing a Harbor. These measure how spread out the naval connections on the map are with larger numbers indicating a wider spread.
  • Famed Items in Camps: this counts the exact number of famed items that are present in enemy camps upon map creation. This is a constant of the seed, i.e. if you use the same seed twice there’ll be the same number of famed items (in fact there’ll be the exact same famed items in the exact same camps).
  • Plains — Shore: these thirteen entries count exactly how many of the 19400 map tiles are of each different terrain type.
  • Blast Furnace — Workshop: these 32 entries count the number of each attached location found on the map.
  • Barber — Fletcher: these 10 entries count the number of each building type found within settlements on the map.

Instructions for use

  1. Download mod_map_data.zip from this page. Don’t unzip it.
  2. Temporarily remove all mods you currently have installed to avoid compatibility issues (I’d recommend simply moving them to another location whilst you run this tool).
  3. Place mod_map_data.zip in your Battle Brothers data folder ( C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Battle Brothers\data on my PC).
  4. Launch Battle Brothers and start a new campaign. The settings you choose don’t matter, however don’t change the seed from whatever the game pre-generates for you.
  5. Leave the game for as little or as long as you want. When I run this script, the game will usually crash to desktop after about 5.5 hours, but this may vary depending on your hardware. If you’d rather not wait that long you can always force quit the game (on Windows 7 I do Ctrl+Alt+Del , open Windows Task Manager, go to Processes, find BattleBrothers.exe *32 and select End Process, but any method that forces the game to properly close should work).
  6. Now navigate to your Battle Brothers log file ( C:\Users\[USER]\Documents\Battle Brothers\log.html for me, where [USER] is the current Windows user).
  7. Copy the log to some other location. Important: do not relaunch Battle Brothers until you have done this, otherwise the contents of the log will be overwritten and all your PC’s hard work will be lost.
  8. Optional: feel free to open the log and take a look. Try searching for the term «seed»: the number of instances found is equal to the total number of seeds you’ve collected data for, and you can go to each one to manually examine the data (it should consist of 63 red lines in the log).
  9. Send the log to jerekkruger at gmail dot com (obviously translate this into a real email address) with the subject «BBLOG» (minus the quotes). By using this subject I can set up a filter that puts these emails in a different folder, making it less likely that they’ll be lost amongst all the other emails I get on this address.

Note: I’ve tried to make these instructions as clear as possible, but as always it’s difficult to think of everything. If you need clarification, or have an idea on how to improve these instructions, let me know and I’ll do my best to improve them.

The eventual plan is to have a website front end for the data that will allow filtering and sorting, but that may take a while. In the mean time I’ll host the data in a Google spreadsheet here, and will try to update this as often as frequently as I can.
